Kinetic Particle Theory Explained – O Level Chemistry (5070)

What is the Kinetic Particle Theory?

The Kinetic Particle Theory states that:

• All matter is made of tiny particles
• These particles are constantly moving
• The speed of the particles depends on temperature
• Particles have forces of attraction between them

The word kinetic means movement, so the theory focuses on how particles move and interact.


Particle Behaviour in Solids

In solids:

• Particles are very closely packed together
• Particles are arranged in a fixed and regular pattern
• Particles vibrate in fixed positions

Because particles cannot move freely, solids:

• Have a fixed shape
• Have a fixed volume
• Cannot flow

Examples of solids include ice, salt, metal, and wood.

In liquids:

• Particles slide past each other

This allows liquids to:

• Flow easily
• Take the shape of their container
• Maintain a fixed volume

In gases:

• Particles are very far apart
• Particles move rapidly in all directions
• There are very weak forces between particles

Because of this, gases:

• Have no fixed shape
• Have no fixed volume
• Spread to fill any container

Examples of gases include oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide.


Effect of Temperature on Particle Movement

Temperature has a major effect on particle motion.

When temperature increases:

• Particles gain kinetic energy
• Particles move faster

When temperature decreases:

• Particles lose kinetic energy
• Particle movement slows down

This explains why heating a substance can cause it to melt or boil.
