Sound Representation Explained – Sample Rate & Sample Resolution (O Level Computer Science 2210 / IGCSE 0478)

How Computers Represent Sound

Sound in the real world is a continuous analogue wave.

However, computers can only process digital data (binary).

To store sound in a computer, the sound wave must be converted into digital form using a process called sampling.

During sampling:

  • The sound wave is measured at regular intervals

  • Each measurement is stored as binary data

What Is Sampling?

Sampling is the process of measuring a sound wave at regular time intervals.

Each measurement is called a sample.

The computer records the amplitude (height of the sound wave) at each sample point.

These values are then stored as binary numbers.

What Is Sample Rate?

Sample rate is the number of samples taken per second.

It is measured in Hertz (Hz).

Example:

44,100 Hz

This means the sound wave is sampled 44,100 times per second.

Higher sample rates result in:

  • More accurate sound recording

  • Better sound quality

  • Larger file sizes

What Is Sample Resolution?

Sample resolution refers to the number of bits used to store each sample.

Example:

Sample ResolutionPossible Values8 bits256 levels16 bits65,536 levels

Higher sample resolution means:

  • More accurate representation of sound

  • Better audio quality

  • Larger file size

How Sample Rate and Resolution Affect Sound

FactorEffectHigher sample rateBetter sound qualityHigher sample resolutionMore accurate soundHigher valuesLarger file size

Both factors influence audio quality and storage size.

Example

A music file recorded with:

  • Sample rate: 44,100 Hz

  • Resolution: 16 bits

will have higher sound quality than a recording with:

  • Sample rate: 8,000 Hz

  • Resolution: 8 bits

However, the first file will also be much larger.

Why Sound Representation Is Important

Understanding sound representation helps students learn:

  • How music and audio are stored digitally

  • Why audio files vary in size

  • How sound quality is controlled

This knowledge is important in fields like:

  • Music production

  • Multimedia design

  • Video editing

Exam Tip (2210 / 0478)

Students are often asked to:

  • Define sample rate

  • Define sample resolution

  • Explain how these affect sound quality and file size

Remember:

  • Higher sample rate = more samples per second

  • Higher resolution = more accurate sound levels

Practice Question

Explain one factor that increases the file size of a sound file.

Answer

Increasing the sample rate increases the number of samples taken per second, which increases the file size.
