What Is a Blast Furnace?

A blast furnace is a large industrial furnace used to extract iron from its ore.

This reaction produces molten iron.


Formation of Slag

Limestone decomposes when heated.

CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂

Calcium oxide then reacts with silica impurities.

CaO + SiO₂ → CaSiO₃

This produces slag, which removes impurities.


Products of the Blast Furnace

Two main products are produced.

Molten Iron

Molten iron collects at the bottom of the furnace and is removed for further processing.

It is used to produce steel and other iron products.


Slag

Slag floats on top of molten iron and is removed separately.

It is used in:
